Recap & Pix from the Chat Noir Forum in Second Life
My thanks to everyone who came to last Sunday's Mplex forum with Chat Noir
(Kate Lee & Sherwin Liu). It was informative and fun. With around 15 people in attendance including Dulci, IceAxe, Jorge Campos, Gabe and many others, Kate and Sherwin spoke for over an hour and answered questions about their work flow primarily in Moviestorm. We also discussed at length the process of working with voice actors. Kate talked about her script writing process a bit and suggested that some screenwriting classes really helped her get a handle on the process.
Their transition from The Movies to using Moviestorm was an interesting topic of discussion. Moviestorm allows for more customization and animation-blending was a big help to them in their desire to make better films. Thinking that both Kate and Sherwin were interested in genre films (40's Classic Hollywood style), I was surprised to learn that they created films like "In the Shadows" because The Movies had so much content from that period. Although they both were interested in trying to create a noir film.
As I'm just learning how to create things in Second Life, I created a billboard with images from some of chat noir's most interesting films along with Kate and Sherwin's name. Placed a few chairs and a couch, but I wish I had picked up some bleacher seats for those attending. I had though that most folks would just sit on the grass, but surprisingly people wanted to sit in an actual chair/seat.
Towards the end of the forum we talked with Sherwin about his process of making music: he doesn't play instruments pe se, but puts together music from samples. Man, you'd hardly know it considering how good his music is. And I'm going to hold him to a promise to post a "music for machinima filmmakers" tutorial at the chatnoir blog at some point in the future.
Sherwin and Kate talked about their new film, "Incubus" which is about half way through the production process. Sherwin mentioned that they'd like to do some short films in the future, too. One of my favorites of their films is their 1-minute movie contest entry "Darren
" which is quite an experimental work for them. I hope they are able to do more short films as they both have a real feel for the form.
My sincere thanks Academy Portucalis, a Second Life media/learning center, for use of their land for the chat noir forum.
Note: the forum for March will be announced this coming week.
